We are specialized in finishing films and video, but we also assist you from conception to delivery of your project. In addition we provide services à la carte, from digitizing to mastering. Every project is carefully reviewed, and with your goals in mind, we help you make the best decisions to achieve the highest possible film quality.

Digital Services

Because of the numerous choices in image acquisition and editing available today, we are dedicated to helping you sort out the best workflow for your project. We believe our tools and technical skills should be used first and foremost to serve your story.

Some of the technical decisions we help you make for your project are:

  • acquisition formats and aspect ratios (HD, SD, film, 4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2.39:1 etc…)
  • world video standards (Standard Definition, NTSC or PAL, High Definition BT.709, 4K)
  • compression format, codecs and data rates (RAW, ProRes, file sequence, MXF, RED, AVC‑Intra, DVCPRO, MPEG‑4, MJPEG, Wavelet, etc…)
  • delivery formats (tape, electronic files, DVD‑Video, Blu‑ray Disc, film)

We make sure your finished program complies with the requirements of the delivery format standard ( i.e. broadcast television, DVD‑Video, Blu‑ray Disc or website video).

Creative Editorial

Kosmos Productions is fully equipped with a state‑of‑the‑art non‑linear editing system that will best shape your story. We handle High Definition (HD) or Standard Definition (SD) images of all flavors including 4K, 2K, 1080p, 720p, D1, DV, NTSC and PAL standards. We monitor both your video and audio signal in a broadcast environment.

Digital workflow from start to finish

Our editing workflow includes digitizing or transferring your footage into our editing system. Using dedicated hardware, we digitize your video no matter what your source format is. We support analog or digital signals, including component and SDI, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. Depending on the worflow we can edit offline or directly online.

Montage & Delivery

Editing is a process that includes sorting, selecting, arranging, and cutting different types of media to fit a specific time and to synthesize your original footage. Using a variety of tools, we add graphics and titles to fit the design of your story. We are experienced with documentary, corporate, trailer, feature and commercial, films and videos.

We know your time is precious, and your feedback in this process is important to us. You may participate in the editing session in our studio, or we can facilitate internet online review, or provide you with a DVD including timecode information.

Our software allows us to seamlessly integrate any special effects in your program, including titles and motion graphics. Any necessary voice over is recorded and placed during editing. Once the video and audio are "locked" in time, we move to color correction and audio mixing, before creating your master version.

Visual Effects

Visual effects help to enhance your story. You might need them to alter the recorded footage, to add something that was not there in the first place, or to enhance your pictures.

Visual Effects design includes the following techniques:

  • compositing
  • noise reduction
  • rotoscoping
  • motion tracking
  • stop‑motion / animation
  • chroma keying
  • adding grain
  • painting
  • stabilizing

Titles & Motion Graphics

Titling is an important part of any film: from the opening to the credits, including lower‑thirds, or captions. It can range from simple overlying the video to a more complex animated graphics.

Motion graphics can be used to better describe some complex concepts or to make an appealing title sequence. Whether in 2D or 3D, the possibilities are endless, depending on the style required by your project.

Titles and Motion Graphics services include:

  • title animation for opening
  • 2D & 3D graphics design
  • photo‑animation
  • particle system

Color Grading

Color correcting is a critical step that gives some character to your project. Also known as color grading, we change the mood of your pictures by giving a specific look and feel to your footage. We work on the primary color, adjusting contrast and colors on a scene by scene basis.

Using secondary, we isolate elements in your pictures to focus on what is important to you and your audience. This is also the process where we make your footage consistent between different camera sources: we focus our full attention on each shot so that at the end your graded film looks like it was shot in one continuous scene!

Color grading includes:

  • selecting a friendly color correction format
  • working in the intended delivery color profile (i.e. Rec. 709 for HD)
  • grading shot by shot using primary and secondary color correction
  • mastering your color corrected film

Audio Mixing

During audio mixing we balance all your sound track elements, such as voice over, sound effects, music and natural sounds, so that we can focus on your story. In stereo or surround mix, sound creates a sense of space and perspective. Sound design is critical to audience perception of film quality.

Audio mixing also includes:

  • music editing
  • audio cleaning
  • voice over recording
  • normalizing
  • noise reduction
  • sound effects
  • encoding

Subtitle Creation

If your film is intended for both domestic and international markets, we provide subtitling services for your foreign language.

Working with a team of translators, we make sure that your dialogs are localized to the target country. We use spotting techniques to make sure your video and audio stay synchronized in your foreign language.

Subtitles are edited to fit the safe area of your screen. The text is formatted using color and font that allow maximum readeability.

Data Management & Conversion

From the day we start working on your project to the delivery of the finished film, we manage all the digital data. With your project requirements in mind, we work with you to define the best workflow strategy to ensure an efficient process.

Our goal is to maintain, and if possible, improve the quality of your footage. We handle a variety of file formats, from uncompressed to professional camera formats like RED, XDCAM HD, AVC‑INTRA, DVCPRO HD, as well as consumer file formats like HDV, DV and MPEG‑2.

Services we provide in data management include:

  • conversion and transcoding
  • optimizing film & video for the internet (i.e Youtube & Vimeo)
  • backing up data
  • archiving

DVD & Blu-ray Authoring

Once your film is edited and the master created, it is time for delivery! If you choose a disc medium, you have the choice between DVD‑Video or Blu‑ray disc.

It can be a simple disc that will play automatically once inserted in a player, or a fully authored DVD with a startup menu and interactive choices to access layers of information.

DVD authoring includes:

  • creative menu and interface design
  • video and audio assets encoding
  • advanced menu authoring
  • adding subtitles
  • master building, formatting & burning
  • duplication & replication
